THE VENUE

In June 1995 the company purchased the building where it had been renting a rehearsal space since 1987. A grant from the Québec government in 1991 had made it possible to meet municipal safety standards so that the company could invite people to attend its work in progress.

Located in the Villeray neighbourhood, the premises were adjoining a bakery that ultimately went out of business and so the building was put up for sale. Thanks to joint financing from the governments of Québec and Canada, the Conseil régional de développement de l'île de Montréal and the City of Montréal, Les Deux Mondes bought the building and transformed it to accommodate offices, storage room for touring productions, a set construction workshop and, most importantly, to have at its disposal a space to meet its own increasing multimedia production needs. On November 4, 1996 — its 24th anniversary — the company opened its creative centre.

The14,868 sq. ft. (1.381 m2) space has a soundproof, variable-geometry hall measuring 74' x 48'7" (22.56 x 14.8 m) and 20' high (6.1 m), without columns (see plans), which can sit 140 spectators in a proscenium type arrangement.

Its main mandate is to encourage the development of the company's new creative projects, and it is occasionally used as a venue. When Les Deux Mondes is on tour, it can be rented as a rehearsal or shooting space.
