Thirty years of research and creation in Québec
Languages, cultures, peoples the Earth is a global village that Les Deux Mondes enjoys helping audiences discover through its rich mythologies, struggles and interrogations.
Today, thirty-three years after its founding in 1973, the company is still directed by two of its founding members, director Daniel Meilleur and actress/animator Monique Rioux, and by composer Michel Robidoux who joined the artistic direction in 1989. It has remained faithful to the goals of artistic innovation and experimentation announced when it was it founded, and to its intention to produce work for audiences of all ages.
The shows created by Les Deux Mondes are sometimes addressed to adults, sometimes to children, and sometimes to both of them.
While they still strive to present highly accomplished artistic work that is both meaningful and accessible to as many people as possible, the directors of Les Deux Mondes have explored different ways of saying and doing things, with the ambition of creating better understanding of our differences: between young and old, men and women, History and everyday life, people from the North and those from the South, the have-nots and the well-to-do, obscurantism and responsible freedom, acts of violence and sings of welcome...
Whenever possible, Les Deux Mondes enjoy taking up the artistic challenge of performing in the language of host countries. All the shows were created in French and generally translated towards English, and the company has sometimes performed in Spanish, German and Russian.
Music has always played a major role in the company's work. Since the 1990s, Les Deux Mondes has also earned a reputation for its use of new technologies and the multimedia in the theatre.
